Hey Beauties !!! :)
Today I was speaking to a lovely girl I know who will be starting Beauty Therapy in college this September. She has a lot of questions to ask me as she was quite nervous about the Beauty industry although it is something she has always wanted.
So I said I would do a blog post on life as a Beauty student & entering the beauty world once you have graduated.
1. "You don't need to finish school/pass your leaving cert to do beauty"- Ouch !!!
- That sentence has to be the most hurtful thing to anyone in the Beauty Industry. Depending on the qualification you wish to get & the quality of the college you want to attend you will 99% of the time you need your leaving cert exams. One of the main modules in Beauty therapy is Anatomy & Physiology. In my first year of college I had the exact same book for Anatomy & physiology as my cousin who was in her first year of Nursing in Trinity college. I would suggest a knowledge of Biology if you're wanting to go on to do Beauty of any sort.
2. How long is a Beauty Therapy course & where did you study?
- I studied in LA College of Creative Arts in Dublin City. LA are an international college located in Dublin , London & Los Angeles, so if you live in London or Los Angeles check it out too! http://www.lacollegeofcreativearts.com/
-I studied for 1 year full time, it was a Monday-Friday course where we learned everything from facials, waxing, make up, nails , massage, body & facial electricals etc etc. In the near future I plan to go back to LA to update my make up skills & cant wait to do so.
3. Was the course expensive?
-Define expensive... In my opinion nothing is expensive if the outcome is going to be worth it & you put in the effort. My course "cost a lot of money" but I wouldn't of said it was "Expensive" as I Graduated with distinctions, have worked in 2 of Irelands leading Spas & freelance too. So it pays to attend a college with a good reputation & that gives you good qualifications.
4. When you graduated was it hard to get into the working world?
-YES !!! When I graduated I found it very hard to get work, I moved to London where I worked for a short time but it was temporary work so I ended up returning home. Thankfully my qualifications & college results got me out there & I started working in "The Spa" in Johnstown house hotel in Enfield Co.Meath where I was trained up in all Elemis Products & gained amazing experience working with top trainers, working on VIP's & gaining a huge confidence in my selling of products, I worked there for a year & moved jobs to a spa closer to home in The River Spa in The Knightsbrooke hotel in Trim Co.Meath which is known as a haven of relaxation, where products are exclusive & Is known for its long standing reputation. In the River Spa I have worked with Ytsara - An organic thai products, Comfort Zone- A luxurious Italian Skin care for the face, body & soul that gives immediate & progressive results combining the best of science & nature. Sundari is the final product we use in The River Spa the word "Sundari" means "a Beautiful woman" these products are also formulated with only organic ingredients. I have gained a lot of experience in a short space of time & I would never look back or change my career.
5. Tips for getting a job?
-Work for free for experience during your college duration. Have a very clear CV showing what you will be/are qualified in & that you do actually have an interest in Beauty Therapy because if you turn up for an interview and come across as not interested in the industry your employer will notice that vibe. Dress as if you are the employer, you want this job don't you ? Then act like it ! Neat hair , I suggest a neat bun, Natural day make up, Wear black or something on the lines of a uniform like a tunic with no logo & some smart shoes. Its all about First impressions so never forget that.
6. Believe in Yourself !
- Whenever you find yourself doubting how far you can go, just remember how far you've come. Remember everything you faced to get to where you are. The strongest factor for success is self-esteem; Believing you can do it and believing you'll get to where you want to be!
I hope this has helped, If any of you future Beauty Therapists have any further questions please comment below & Ill be happy to help.
Have a fab day Beauties :)
